ABOUT STEPHEN F KIELY

I am father of four, husband, and attorney who is looking to use the skills which I have acquired to ensure that Southold stays rural.  I have 20 years of municipal law experience as an assistant town attorney for Brookhaven, Southampton, and currently as the Town Attorney for Shelter Island.  Further, I  have hyper local expertise as a former Southold Town Assistant Town Attorney who represented the Zoning Board, Planning Board, Trustees, and of note authored the short term rental prohibition and was the chief prosecutor.  I also had a private practice for 6 years based in Mattituck, where I specialized in land use and zoning matters and additionally served as one of the prosecutors for the Village of Greenport.  I know how the system works and how it can be used as a shield.

I am running simply because I feel compelled to.  I love our Town, as it is, and we need someone qualified to protect the residents, and soul of this Town, from the imminent suburban sprawl pressures, not only from private developers, but also from New York State, which is currently trying to coerce the construction of 473 new homes to be built in Southold in 3 years, despite what our comprehensive plan and zoning says.  Farmland will be converted into subdivisions and rural character will be replaced.  Farmers need to be given the tools to fiscally survive, as well as business’s that further and support agriculture.

Suburbanization has consequences that are irreparable-increased population, increased pressure on municipal services and natural resources, loss of open space, loss of small town charm and increased crime.  I humbly ask for your vote to “Keep it Rural” and “Keep it Southold”.
